Internet of Things and
Systems Engineering Research Group
(IoT-SERG)

The Internet of Things (IoT) has recently emerged as a powerful platform for connecting various objects equipped with different sensors to provide an efficient way of collecting and analysing data. In the years to come, billions of devices and objects will be connected to the Internet and this number is going to increase. This will change everything, including ourselves.

The change opens massive opportunities for researchers and industries to identify new applications and systems. These applications and systems pertain a wide range of application domains such as: Smart Homes and Cities, Smart Energy Systems, Environmental Science, Healthcare Systems, Smart Agricultural Systems and Localisation and Monitoring of Objects.

The Internet of Things and Systems Engineering Research Group (IoT-SERG) at the Sulaimaniy Polytechnic University (SPU) undertakes excellent research into engineering systems interacting with physical and real environments in the realm of the Internet of Things, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and Embedded Systems. The group also focuses on the design, implementation, deployment and management of various IoT systems and their applications through a range of innovative systems and engineering solutions.

Our aims are:

- To undertake research into various IoT and embedded systems.
- To promote research and systems engineering amongst postgraduate and undergraduate students via supervising their projects and dissertations.
- To facilitate exchange of ideas and to disseminate the research knowledge via seminars, workshops, symposiums and conferences.
- To facilitate an advanced research facility for researchers to undertake their research projects.
- To promote the use of microcontrollers through offering support and guidance in the evaluation and selection of projects amongst postgraduate and undergraduate students.

Facilities

Our IoT-SERG lab is equipped with essential instrumentation and equipment to evaluate and prototype any IoT and embedded system project. As the microcontroller (MCU) is the core element of any IoT and embedded systems, the lab offers various development boards and kits to work in a range of microcontrollers right from the lowest 8-bit to the powerful 64-bit cores including single-core/multi-core variants from industry-leading manufacturers such as Microchip, Cypress, Texas Instruments and ST Microelectronics and more. Additionally, as the sensors are integral part of any IoT system the lab also provides many types of sensors such as temperature, humidity and pressure sensors, to name but a few.

Research Opportunities

Supporting research in computing and technology is an important part of our overall mission. Independent research is one of the most valuable experiences you can pursue at our lab. You can be a part of our research group – either by undertaking your research projects and ideas with our group members or by undertaking your research using our facilities and resources.
We encourage all interested researchers to take advantage of these opportunities. We do also have opportunities for PhD/MSc research programmes.
